Damascus steel is made by forge-welding layers of steel together, folding them, and drawing them out again. Etch the finished blade and the layers surface as flowing lines. Because the folding is done by hand, no two blades ever come out the same — the pattern on this one exists on this one only.

The blade is double-edged and runs to a 32-inch overall length, set into a rosewood handle with a leather sheath. Rosewood darkens slowly with handling, so the piece changes a little over the years it sits with you.

Why 32 inches. Full-length swords need a lot of wall. This one fits a shelf, a cabinet, or a narrower stretch of wall where a 40-inch blade would crowd everything around it. It's the size people buy when they want a Damascus piece they'll actually have room to display properly.

Care

Damascus needs oil. Wipe the blade with a light machine or mineral oil every few months to protect the etch, and keep it dry. Store out of reach of children.
